Gay Marriage In Massachusetts (And California?)

It looks as though California may be ready to join with Massachusetts and allow same-sex marriage. I am thrilled to see another state extending this right. But of course there are the naysayers who seem to have their panties all in a twist. From Boston.com:

Kris Mineau, president of the Massachusetts Family Institute, which opposes same-sex marriage, said Massachusetts, as the first and only other state to legalize gay marriage, would be a case study, and he expressed hope that Californians would approve the proposed constitutional ban. Calling the California court ruling "an outrageous act of judicial activism" and an "assault on democracy," Mineau asserted: "The lessons to draw out of Massachusetts will be that this was done by judicial edict. The people need to take back democracy."

Let me explain something to you Kris. See, when you have folks vote on a civil rights issue, they don't tend to vote on the constitutionality of the actual issue but instead base their vote on whatever their parents, church, friends and or family have taught them about the particular subject. I don't know about you, but I tend to try to think for myself and not to blindly follow the dogma of any particular organization. God gave me a brain for a reason.

So please do us all a favor and leave the good folks of California alone. Don't gather up a band of your religious political extremists and hop on the next plane to the west coast. They don't need you there. And to be honest, we don't need you here either.

I am worried about some minor issues going on around me today - the cost of gas, the war in Iraq, how much I have to pay for healthcare, the dumbing down of America. Who my neighbor is married to or what they do in their bedroom - not so much.

Really Kris, don't you think there are better ways to spend your time?

Wonderful post CJ....
Thanks OC. Isn't there some sort of say we loath in others what we hate most about ourselves? I think the ones that yell the loudest about it are the ones with the most to hide.

CJ - so well written, especially the dumbing down of America. I would have to say this is probably my biggest hot button - thanks for writing what so many think even my uber conservative cousin thinks as you and I on this one and has taken her spouse to task on it as well.

I really hope that the decision in California is a sign of progress. And I hope that the feared backlash doesn't pan out at all. Maybe I'm naive, but I really think the atmosphere is changing. Great post.

Oh - and there is profound truth in what Robert says.
Thank you Cristina. I'm all for letting folks believe in whatever they want, but when it infringes upon the rights of others, that's when I get really po'd.
Hi Karen - I hope too that things go smoothly in CA. I'm really hoping this sets a change in motion and that eventually other states will follow.
They sure are Robert. Another reason not to wind up in such a state in the first place!
